Arab Spring

The term "Arab Spring" refers to a series of events in North Africa and the Middle East that began in December 2010, after a street vendor in Tunisia set himself on fire in front of a municipal building to protest his work conditions. His public act of protest sparked a full-blown popular uprising in Tunisia, which then touched off protests and revolutions throughout the Arab world. More than a dozen Arab nations saw sweeping grass-roots movements that resulted in political changes. In some countries, these changes were achieved through nonviolent protests; however, in others, such protests turned to violent revolution.
