Harper Lee (1926–2016) was an American author known for her Pulitzer Prize–winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird, published in 1960. The book is considered a classic of American literature and tackles a number of controversial issues, such as prejudice and racial injustice. Although she published a few essays following the book’s release, Lee’s writing career essentially came to an end in the late 1960s, after which she seldom made public appearances. A purported sequel of To Kill a Mockingbird was published in 2015, although the manuscript was later confirmed to be the first draft of To Kill a Mockingbird.
