Racism begins with the belief that members of different races possess specific qualities or abilities and that those qualities mark them as either inferior or superior to another. Racism often results in prejudice, discrimination, suspicion, and hostility by members of one race toward another. In the extreme, racism becomes institutionalized, taking the form of laws, policies, and traditions that segregate and stratify races of people into distinct classes, each with its own status and privileges.
