The Renaissance was a period in European history beginning around 1350 and coming to a close around the end of the sixteenth century. Although a number of important social, economic, and political changes took place throughout Europe during this time, most agree it was the revival of classical Greek and Roman ideals, as well as their cultural and intellectual achievements, that define the period. The word Renaissance means, literally, "rebirth," and is used figuratively to describe the revival of art, music, architecture, and other cultural or intellectual pursuits.
