Drug Abuse

Drug abuse, or substance abuse, usually refers to a range of drug use behaviors, including frequent use of illegal psychoactive street drugs, recreational use of medical drugs for nontherapeutic purposes, or doping, the use of performance enhancing steroids and drugs to boost oxygen delivery to tissues during sporting events. Some experts assert that a key component of drug abuse is that such use harms the individual. While physical dependence is not required for use to be considered abuse, physical or psychological dependence is often associated with drug abuse. Debates over drug regulation and enforcement policies continues in many countries, including the United States.
