Title: Effects of different physical exercise programs on blood pressure and anthropometric indicators of the elderly/Efeitos de diferentes programas de exercicios fisicos na pressao arterial e indicadores antropometricos de idosas
Abstract :

Population aging is a worldwide phenomenon that has been accelerating in recent decades. Thus, several possibilities have been discussed to include this target public in programs of regular physical exercises as a way to improve their health conditions. This way, the objective of the present study was to evaluate different physical exercise modalities: strength training (n = 22), gymnastics (n = 23), water aerobics (n = 24) and (Pilates n = 24) in blood pressure and anthropometric indicators on elderly women's muscular strength and functional autonomy. A total of 114 elderly women randomly divided into these four experimental groups and control group took part in the study. Classes were held three times a week on alternate days lasting 60 minutes for 24 weeks. The results showed that the anthropometric indicators could be modified after 24 weeks of intervention by gymnastics modalities and strength training, however, the classification of the body mass index was overweight at all times and in all modalities. Waist circumference was classified as "very high risk" at all times and in all modalities. On the other hand, systolic blood pressure obtained significant results after the intervention in all modalities, whereas diastolic blood pressure did not obtain such results in the Pilates exercise modality. However, only the gymnastics group changed the classification of arterial hypertension grade 1 to borderline while the remaining groups remained borderline even presenting differences after training. Key Words: Physical Exercises, Blood Pressure, Anthropometric Indicators, Aging.
