Mental health disorders, also called mental illnesses, interfere with a person’s ability to think, feel, function, express moods and emotions, and relate to other people. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in five American adults is affected by a mental disorder each year. Mental disorders affect people of all ages, races, and income levels. Those suffering from a mental illness are not the only ones affected by the disorder because mental illnesses also affect families, friends, caregivers, and communities.
